What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. As an energy healing technique, it is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words — Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.” Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect.
Reiki energy has it’s own innate wisdom and creates a state of compassion for both the client and practitioner. In the quiet meditative space that is created in a Reiki treatment, we realize that we are all connected and share Oneness at some level. We realize that we are all more than our illness or limitation; we are a bright being of love and light, a part of Spirit. It is in this shared space where we can open up to the infinite possibilities of healing that exist. We acknowledge our thoughts and concerns about an illness, limitation, or situation upfront and send out intentions for the highest outcome, or highest good for all concerned before starting the treatment, but then let it go and give it to Reiki to heal the situation at the level where it is most needed. Reiki also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
Although the healing possibilities through Reiki are infinite, here are some common issues that Reiki can address:
- Back or Muscle pain
- Chronic illness or ailments
- Exhaustion, Low energy
- Anxiety, Worry, Fear
- Pre-surgical or Procedure preparation
- Post-surgical or procedure recovery
- Injury Recovery
- Inflammation and related issues
- Over-active mind, hyper-activity
- Grief, Abandonment, Loss, Transitions of all types
- Stress, Distress
- Sleep Issues
- Weight Issues
What is a Reiki Treatment Like?
A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person or animal including physical body, emotions, mind, and spirit, creating many beneficial effects that include deep relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. When the client is in a deeply relaxed state, they remember that they can self-heal and activate that part of their life force within themselves. Because it works with energy, Reiki treatments can be done via long distance, short distance (same room/space), via laying hands on, or hovering positions over the body. It is equally effective delivered in person or remotely. There are no side-effects, and no harm can come from Reiki.
Reiki for People
People coming for a Reiki treatment will come to a relaxing, professional environment, such as a massage studio/spa, where they can get away from distractions, enjoy relaxing music, and let go of their day for the duration of their treatment. They will lie upon a Reiki or Massage table, fully clothed except for their shoes, covered by a blanket, if they wish. The practitioner will explain the meditative environment and ask them to set their intentions for whatever healing they need and then ask them to let go and relax during the treatment. We use a series of hovering hand positions over and around the body and some short distance Reiki, as we work with the energy centers in your body. While there are seven major energy centers, also known as chakras, there are hundreds of minor chakras, that facilitate the flow of Ki or life force energy throughout the body. The practitioner will be guided by Reiki as to where on the body to focus as they move around the Reiki table while you lay relaxed.
A typical treatment lasts from 30 — 60 minutes. Many people find themselves falling asleep as they become relaxed during their treatments! Others can feel the flow of energy or tingling sensations as the energy moves through their bodies. Some people experience a weighty or heavy feeling, and some feel light and floaty! Each person’s experience will differ, and will differ each time they experience Reiki depending on what they need during the treatment. For some people, only one Reiki treatment may be needed for their issue; for others multiple treatments may be needed to facilitate healing more gradually, or in layers. Many people come for Reiki treatments on a regular basis as part of their wellness plan to facilitate staying in balance and good health.
Reiki for Animals
While the benefits and sensations of Reiki are similar to working with people, the approach to working with animal clients differs in that the Animal will take the lead in letting us know how much contact they need. Whether done in the wild, at a shelter or sanctuary, at someone’s home, yard, or stable, the practitioner takes a stationary position near the animal, allowing the animal as much freedom and space as practical and possible. The practitioner sets the meditative intention and holds a space of healing intention for the animal to connect to, with clear intention that is totally up to the animal to take as little or much of the energy being offered as they wish, to come and go into and out of this connected space as their needs dictate.
Because of the meditative nature of creating and holding the healing space and healing intentions, Animal Reiki can be done quite effectively as long distance or remote Reiki, where the practitioner is not in the same physical space as the animal. This is very beneficial for animals that are not able to travel or where it is not appropriate to be in close contact with them for a treatment. As long as they feel safe and trust that they are not being forced to do anything, many animals will positively respond to and recognize the healing energy of Reiki and connect with it fairly quickly.
Animals intuitively understand and are sensitive to energy and the benefits of deep relaxation, self-healing, and being in balance and harmony. Sometimes the animal will move around in their environment, or may change positions. Many will exhibit relaxation behaviors and fall asleep, or yawn, sigh and stretch. If the situation allows, such as a dog or cat at home, or a horse in it’s stable, some may even come forward and push a part of their body up against the practitioner’s hands to feel the hands-on healing more directly.
Reiki treatments for animals can last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the environment and the animal’s needs. Because animals have fewer filters and ego-mind distractions than people, they can often connect with the energy quite quickly and may get benefits from even very short treatments. Like a person, the animal may respond positively with just one Reiki session, or require a series of treatments for healing their issue. As with people, ongoing benefits of wellness, health, and balance are realized through a regular maintenance program of Reiki as part of the animal’s health and wellness program.
