Self-care is a term that can cover a lot of ground. For some people, it’s their daily walk, run or cycling, for others it’s a weekly yoga or meditation class, or getting a monthly therapeutic massage or a Reiki treatment. Whatever form it takes, it’s something that when you do it, makes you feel more like yourself, and great! It re-balances you, which could be energizing or relaxing depending on your needs.
What’s important is to realize that taking time to do self-care is not self-ish. In our culture we are often taught to care for others first and that it’s better to give than to receive. Yet, if we over-do either of those, we often find our own needs getting short-cut, if met at all, because we run out of time or energy. And that can lead to expressing frustration, anger, and resentment. This is not who we really are, but happens because we are mad at ourselves for not valuing ourselves enough to honor our own needs equally with other people’s. We all need and deserve time to relax, renew, and re-charge in a way that works for us.
To do that, we need to flip the model, and prioritize our own needs first. If you’ve ever flown on an airliner, the crew always tells you to “put on your own oxygen mask first” during the safety briefing. This is because you can’t actually help others if you can’t save yourself first! Also, you can’t give away that which you do not have. So in the case of your personal energy, to be available to serve in the roles you’ve chosen in your life, you need to have an overage, or abundance of energy available before you can give it away to others. If you do not, you will be draining your personal well before there is enough water to drink to sustain your own basic needs!
So as you think about how you will operate your life this year, here are three reasons why developing a good self-care routine will reap you health and wellness benefits for the long haul.
- Once you learn it or know how to do it, it’s “free” and available to you 24/7, all you have to do is prioritize and make time to do it in order to reap continuing benefits of health and wellness. This could mean taking a new yoga, meditation, or Reiki class to learn the skills, then committing to a home practice. The key is to find something you like to do that makes you feel great, and schedule it into your daily life. Make it the most important “meeting” of the day, and never bump it off your calendar for anything else – ever! Enroll family, friends, and colleagues so they learn to respect your time for this activity and do not encroach on it.
- Doing your self-care routine on a daily basis, provides a solid foundation for your life to help you handle life’s up’s, down’s, and curve balls. It becomes an integral part of who you are. Missing a session makes you feel “off kilter” and your day runs totally differently. Runners often say how bad they feel if they miss a run. And its not just physically, they also feel different mentally and emotionally as they miss the integrated mind-body experience that running provides them. It’s the same with any self-care practice. As it becomes a valuable part of your daily experience that you cherish for how it makes you feel, you will covet that time because of the benefits of how it helps you handle all aspects of your life better.
- It re-affirms your self-esteem and self-value. Taking care of yourself models excellent behavior that will also help your spouse, friends, children, family, colleagues remember that they each need to take time to value themselves and take care of their own needs. It helps you be the best version of yourself so you can be the best spouse, parent, co-worker, boss, or friend. When your light is shining bright, it helps everyone else, and reminds them to do the same.
